Self-Care Isn’t Just Pampering

Updated: Mar 10

Let’s talk about self-care, but from a different perspective. What if I told you that everything you do—yes, everything—is spiritual? It might sound a little out there at first, but stay with me.

A lot of us have grown up with the idea that spirituality happens in specific places: in a church, a temple, or during quiet meditation. We’re taught that God (or whatever divine presence you believe in) is somewhere “out there,” while we’re here on earth trying to reach that presence. But here’s the thing: most spiritual traditions also teach that God is everywhere. That divine presence isn’t somewhere far away—it’s here, now, in every moment, and in everything we do.

When you start seeing life that way, you realize that self-care isn’t just about pampering yourself or ticking off another thing on your wellness to-do list. It’s an act of worship. It’s gratitude in motion.

Take something as simple as washing your body. At first glance, it’s just a task—soap, scrub, rinse, repeat. But what if you approached it differently?

What if you thought of your body as a gift, a sacred vessel that allows you to experience this incredible world? Washing it then becomes more than cleaning—it’s a cleansing of the energy you’ve carried all day, a renewal of your connection with the divine.

When you moisturize your skin, imagine that you’re infusing it with nourishment, care, and love. When you comb your hair, think of it as tending to your crown—your unique presence in this world. Even putting on makeup becomes an intentional act, designing the face you wish to present to others, a face that reflects the light of the divine within you.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Maybe it’s just sitting quietly with a cup of tea, fully present with the warmth in your hands, the aroma rising from the cup, and the taste on your tongue. That simple moment becomes an offering of gratitude—for the tea, for your ability to perceive its heat and flavor, and for this fleeting experience of being alive.

Here’s the beauty of it: this awareness turns everyday routines into sacred rituals. It doesn’t have to wait for Sunday morning or a special occasion. It’s available to you in every moment—while eating, walking, breathing, or even brushing your teeth.

Gratitude transforms self-care into something more profound. When you’re grateful for your body, for the food you eat, for the warmth of the sun on your skin, you’re acknowledging the divine in those moments.

Think about it: the ability to feel the sun on your face, to taste a delicious meal, or to hear the sound of a loved one’s voice—these are all gifts that won’t last forever. They’re part of the experience of being human, and they’re worth savoring while we have them.

Next time you do something for self-care—whether it’s a long bath, a short walk, or just sipping your tea—pause for a moment. Bring awareness to what you’re doing and why. See it as a way of honoring yourself and the life you’ve been given.

Think:

  • “I’m grateful for this body that carries me through life.”

  • “I’m thankful for this moment, for this experience, for the chance to care for myself.”

  • “This is how I honor the divine within me.”

It doesn’t take much, just a shift in perspective. But that small shift can transform the mundane into something sacred.

Self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant. It doesn’t have to look like bubble baths or spa days (though those are lovely too). It’s about being present, being grateful, and seeing the divine in the small things.

When you approach life this way, every moment becomes a spiritual practice. Every action becomes an act of connection—with yourself, with others, and with the divine. And that, my friend, is what makes self-care so much more than just a routine.

So, the next time you take time for yourself, try this perspective. See how it feels. I promise, you’ll be glad you did.

With love and light,

Chika B.
